Sleep Apnea Treatment

At Cottonwood Dental Group we place a strong emphasis on preventive care and total body wellness – we not only provide comprehensive dental solutions, but also treatment for oral disorders such as sleep apnea to our Highlands Ranch patients.

Sleep apnea occurs when the tissues of the throat obstruct your airway during sleep. This blockage prevents oxygen from getting to the brain, and can disrupt healthy sleep patterns. Although the common signs of sleep apnea (snoring and waking up from loud, gasping breaths) may seem harmless or annoying, sleep apnea can actually lead to a variety of health complications, including fatigue, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and more.

If you show symptoms of sleep apnea, treatment will begin with a recommendation of a comprehensive sleep study. This can be accomplished through a Sleep Center or we can assist in a take home sleep unit. If you choose to have a one night at home sleep test through our office, we send all the data to be read, interpreted, and render a definitive diagnosis with a M.D. who specializes in Sleep Medicine. The Sleep M.D.'s office will then follow up with you on the results of your sleep study and recommendations for treatment. Based upon your individual results and the recommendations of a sleep physician, if you have mild to moderate sleep apnea, this can be effectively treated with an oral sleep appliance. These oral appliances are fabricated through our office. If you are diagnosed with severe sleep apnea, they will recommend use of a CPAP and follow up with a Sleep M.D.

A CPAP machine is the most commonly known treatment for sleep apnea. It is a device that fits over the nose and mouth and forces air into the mouth while you sleep. While it’s a very common option, many patients find CPAP machines to be uncomfortable and inconvenient! If you find that you cannot tolerate a CPAP machine then an oral appliance can be an alternative therapy for you. A small, customized oral appliance to be worn at night. These oral appliances are fabricated through a customized impression process and sent to a top lab, Somnomed. An oral appliances is fabricating using only dental grade materials to help treat mild to moderate sleep apnea or CPAP intolerance. If a sleep M.D. determines this is the right treatment or alternative for you, the benefits include:

  • No bulky equipment
  • No noisy machinery
  • Comfortable fit
  • Snoring prevention

Many people suffer from the side effects of sleep apnea without realizing how serious it could be. The average sleep apnea suffer can lose up to 7 years of their life without treatment. Our goal is to educate our patients about the severity of this condition, and to help those diagnosed by providing access to specialize physicians who can assist in a definitive diagnosis. If appropriate, we can also aid in the fabrication of an oral appliance per the recommendation of an M.D. To learn more about sleep apnea, call our Highlands Ranch office to schedule your consultation today!

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea occurs when the tissues of the throat obstruct your airway during sleep. This blockage prevents oxygen from getting to the brain, and can disrupt healthy sleep patterns.

Drs. DeLapp and Parsons provide comfortable and easy-to-use sleep analysis equipment to be used in the comfort of your own home. Then we will create a treatment plan using our small, customized oral appliance to help you get a sound night’s sleep.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Did you know oral cancer is the third most common case of cancer? Oral cancer may start with a growth or sore in the mouth, which does not go away.

We conduct regular screenings using a life saving, safe, and powerful tool called VELscope, which assists in discovering any oral abnormalities. The tool’s blue-spectrum light causes the soft tissues of the mouth to naturally fluoresce and highlight any inflammation or bacteria present in the mouth. It helps us detect oral cancer before it spreads.

Put a stop to worn-down teeth, jaw soreness and headaches caused by nighttime clenching and grinding!

Our customized two appointments mouthguards based on the bite and mouth of each patient provide a personalized solution. During the first appointment, impressions of the patients’ teeth are taken. A week later, the guard is delivered, along with instructions and a storage case.

We also offer sportsguards for children who participate in sports.

‘‘A healthy smile and a healthy mouth lend themselves to a healthy body.
