Oral cancer is on the rise! It is estimated that approximately 650,000 people have oral pharyngeal cancer and that over 9,000 people each year will die from the disease. In recent years, there has been a huge increase in the prevalence of oral cancer. The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is now responsible for causing more oral cancer than smoking and chewing tobacco.
The key in long term survival and successful treatment of oral pharyngeal cancer is early detection. Did you know there is a simple screening your Highlands Ranch dentists, Dr. DeLapp and Dr. Parsons, can perform at your cleaning and check up exam? Although our dentists perform an oral cancer screening at each visit, additional testing with our VELscope VX system helps us take a closer look and makes early detection much easier.
What is the VELscope VX system.
This hand held device that can be used by Dr. DeLapp and Dr. Parsons, uses natural tissue fluorescence to enhance the way they see the tissues in your mouth. This gives our Highlands Ranch dentists the ability to see abnormalities that may not be visible to the naked eye, leading to earlier diagnosis, treatment, and increasing chances of survival.
Does a positive screening with VELscope mean I have oral cancer?
Not necessarily. The VELScope VX allows our Highlands Ranch dentists, to take a deep look at your tissues. Depending on your lesion, Dr. DeLapp or Dr. Parsons, may recommend that you have a follow up examination or may refer you for a biopsy so that a definitive diagnosis may be established.
How long does it take?
Using the VELScope VX, the screening can take place during your cleaning and check up appointment. The process takes approximately 3 minutes. After which our dentists can discuss if there is anything suspicious or unusual they found and their recommendations.
What does it cost?
We are proud to offer this potentially life saving tests for less than $40. We are also working hard with the ADA to try to make this a part of your insurance benefits as a standard in prevention.
