Dental Insurance 101: Our Highlands Ranch Dental Team explains the differences

Dental Insurance can be overwhelming and confusing. With so many options and plans it can be hard to understand what your specific dental package includes. Unlike Medical Insurance, we like to think of dental insurance as a benefit. Most benefits including a $1,500 to $2,000 a year maximum with a $50-$100 deductible. What that means to you is that your insurance will pay benefits up to $1,500 to $2,000, after that the remaining portion will be out of pocket for you. Within each dental insurance company there are literally thousands of different plans that all reimburse differently for the same dental services.

How did insurance companies come up with that number?

In the 1950’s most people ended up in dentures. This was the standard of dental care in the 50’s. As dental science has evolved, we now understand that dentures are a last resort. At that time period, to extract all of your teeth and fabricate dentures cost around $1,500. Although times have changed, the reimbursement from dental insurance has not, reimbursement still stands at around $1,500 per person per year.

What does that mean for me today?

Dental insurance should be seen as a benefit instead of insurance. A healthy mouth that only requires routine exams, cleanings, radiographs are usually 80%-100% covered under insurance/benefits and if you have a cavity with bacteria, that needs to be filled, usually this is covered 60%-80% under most dental plans. But most people have more dental treatment/needs outside of what dental insurance will cover. Our goal is to maximize your dental benefits but also get you back to the level of dental health you desire. We put your needs first, not just what is covered under your dental benefits.

What is in-network vs. out-of-network mean in dental insurance?

Unlike medical insurance, most dental plans allow you to see any dentist of your choosing. We are considered “in-network” with Delta Premeier. However, if you do not have Delta dental insurance, that does not prohibit you from receiving outstanding dental care from our office. We submit, maximize, and work with any dental insurance that will work with us. The difference is that we are not restricted by the time and financial constraints that being an “in-network” dentist dental insurance places on the practice. We are free to provide you with the dental care you desire and deserve. We chose to provide you with one on one attention/care with our licensed professionals who provide you with up to date products, technology, services, and top notch dental laboratories. Most patients can expect 10%-15% in price difference, but the attention to care you receive, we feel is well worth it!

We don’t let dental insurance dictate the health we provide to you and believe you shouldn’t either. We provide you with level of dental health you desire.
