Root decay in the adult population Dentist Highlands Ranch

Decay in the traditional locations are still possible in the adult population.  However, adults are at risk for decay on the root surfaces of teeth.  Age… prescription medications can contribute to a decrease in saliva.  Decreasing saliva increases your risk of decay. Fluoride treatment can reduce your risk.

Dentist Denver Smoking and Cavities

Posted under: Dental Implants, Dentist Highlands Ranch, Denver Dentist, Denver SEO Company, dentist Denver, denver seo — Dr. James DeLapp @ 2:58 pm

Highlands Ranch Dentist, Denver Dentist, Parker Dentist, Ken Caryl Dentist, Lone Tree Dentist, Castle Pines DentistrySmoking and Cavities Denver Dentist (303) 694-9740

Does smoking cause cavities… no but smoking contributes to the development of decay. Our Highlands Ranch and Denver Dentist most difficult cases and continuing problems revolve around patients who have a past history of smoking or continue to smoke. Our general dentists have dental patients who have dental crowns that is getting more and more difficult to treat as root decay becomes a problem.  Some are at risk of loosing some teeth and a dental implant may be the only solution. Our Denver Dental Implant dentist Dr. James and H. Candace DeLapp also experience and increase in failure of dental implantswith their patients who smoke.  The bottom line is… try to stop smoking!

to view our dental practice video please click the following link dentist Highlands Ranch

How does smoking affect the development of decay

There are several reasons why smoking affects the development of cavities (and gum disease).  In our Highlands Ranch dentists opinion one of the most significant reasons is the “dry mouth” (xerostomia) that smoking causes.  Your saliva helps wash away bacteria off your teeth and gums and when in limited supply plaque sticks to the surfaces of your tooth.

Treatment of Cavities in High Risk patients Denver Dentist

Treatment of cavities in patients who are at risk is complex but can be done effectively.  For more information on this protocol please click the following link Denver dentist and dental decay. In summary it involves the use of fluoride, Listerine and frequent rinsing of your mouth with water (and much more)!

Highlands Ranch Dentist, Denver Dentist, Parker Dentist, Ken Caryl Dentist, Lone Tree Dentist, Castle Pines DentistryRepairing a cavity with MI Paste Dentist Highlands Ranch

Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp (Highlands Ranch Dentists)have been using MI paste for the treatment of very early carious lesions (tooth cavity). If a beginning cavity is detected early the area “may” be treated successfully with MI Paste and in a certain number of cases we have seen radiographic evidence of tooth repair.  Our Highlands Ranch and Denver Dentist also serve patients in the Lone Tree, Castle Pines, Ken Caryl, Parker, Centennial, and Greenwood Village Colorado.

How MI paste works Dentist Denver

The theory on how MI paste works is calcium and fluoride in specific concentrations can, in certain (but not all) cases re-mineralize the tooth structure destroyed by bacteria that causes dental decay. Our Highlands Ranch dentists want to emphasis that the decay has to be “very”small. Traditional treatment of decay with a dental filling is common for the “routine “small and larger areas of decay. The area re-mineralized may or may not be susceptible to the carious process at a later date.  Home care consisting of brushing and flossing as well as diet control is an integral part of decreasing dental cavities.

Dentist Highlands Ranch Cosmetic Dentistry Smile Evaluation (303) 694-9740

Highlands Ranch Dentist, Denver Dentist, Parker Dentist, Ken Caryl Dentist, Lone Tree Dentist, Castle Pines DentistryDentist Highlands Ranch Cosmetic Dentistry Smile Evaluation

Our Highlands Ranch dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp feel the very first step in improving your smile is to completely evaluate your current smile before any treatment.

The canted or tipped smile Dentist Highlands Ranch

The canted or tipped smile is difficult to diagnose and can be challenging to treat.  Recognizing the canted smile is the first and most important element. A recent patient had crowns and veneers placed a couple of years ago but her smile tilted. Examination of old photographs revealed that her smile had been canted a lifetime.  The previous dentist had just replicated the cant.

Correction of tilted teeth Dentist Highlands Ranch

Our Highlands Ranch dentist can correct or “mitigate” the cant or tilt of the smile in “most cases“. This involves complex evaluation of extra oral dental photographs and mounted models showing the cant. A horizontal stick bite is most effective in identifying this to the patient, dentist, and dental laboratory technician. A diagnostic wax-up can be fabricated and in the provisional stage (where you are wearing your temporaries) it can be verified.
