Our Lone Tree and Highlands Ranch dentist use the diagnodent to determine if a tooth has a cavity. The diagnodent is used in conjunction with a visual examination and traditional caries detection methods. Our Lone Tree Colorado dentist understand that this is new technology and many dental patientshave questions about it. Below are some of the more common questions patients ask about the diagnodent. Our dental practice serves the Parker, Castle Pines, Ken Caryl, Douglas County, Greenwood Village and the Greater Denver area. The can be reached at (303) 694-9740.
The diagnodent uses a low level laser to fluoresce the tooth. Cavities emit a certain wave length back to the sensor. The sensor picks up the returning light wave and emits both a digital read out as well as an audio sound.
Is the diagnodent painful?
Our Lone Tree and Highlands Ranch dentist have not found any sensitivity from this procedure. It is like shinning a light on the tooth.
This is the diagnodent
Why use a diagnodent?
We use the diagnodent because we are able to identify a cavity earlier. When detected earlier we can remove the cavity and preserve more of the natural tooth structure. Composite fillings (white dental fillings) allow us to bond to the tooth structure and conserve much more tooth structure that silver fillings allowed us to do.
Does the diagnodent work well with composite fillings or dental sealants?
As a general rule of thumb composite fillings (white dental fillings) fluoresce and can give false positives for cavities. In addition the teeth need to be cleaned and free of plaque and calculus.
Modern dentistry offers so many elements that technology. Having a dental Blog and being able to notify my patients (or potential “new” patients) has been exciting. Currently, I am working with Scott Carvin of US Web Central. Scott’s company is a Denver web design that has designed my web so I can write these Blogs. Many dentists purchased Blog information from a syndicated source and all of ours are written by the doctors. All of the typo’s and grammatical errors are ours! Scott’s Denver Web Design and Denver SEO Company works hard to get this information in a format that many in our community can take advantage of. We hope you find our information helpful. Please feel free to contact us at (303) 694-9740 for an appointment if you wish.

Younger dental patients are not receiving dental information from traditional sources. Podcasts allow dentist to reach a younger web savy generation. The age group that has been identified is the 18-35 year olds. This group represents the heaviest consumers of online videos and is the group the ADA is targeting. In this particular group… the days of a dental brochure explaining a procedure is fading fast. The podcasts are video and audio productions that will be posted on the ADA’s web site and may even be played back on iPods and well as computers with an Internet connection. Scott Carvin of UsWebCentral my Denver web design company will be helping me getting these podcasts available to may patients.
The Diagnodent is a laser cavity detector that can identify cavities that a dental explorer cannot. Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp Highlands Ranch dentists use the diagnodent for cavity detection. The advantage of this cavity (decay) detector was reinforced today when our dentist treated a 16 year old with a suspicious area on a back tooth. Dr’s DeLapp treat dental patients from the Parker, Lone Tree, Castle Pines, Douglas County, Ken Caryl, Greenwood Village, Centennial and the greater Denver area. Typically, dentists use a dental explorer to determine the softness of the tooth structure. If the explorer sticks much of the time dentists determine the area to be carious (cavity) and a dental filling is placed. In this particular case, the area was barely sticky with the dental explorer and our dentist questioned on whether to restore the tooth or not.
The diagnodent laser cavity detector indicated a value of 60 on a scale or 0-99 with 99 indicating severe decay and 0 nothing. A value of over 20-30 may indicate are area of concern a possible decay.
In this particular case, a value of 60 indicated a concern. There was a very small… barely detectable area with a dental explorer. When the area was open up with the dental drill the area of decay was substantial. The area of decay had “cavitated” with a small opening on the occlusal surface and a large area of decay in the dentin of the tooth. Without the aid of the diagnodent treatment on this tooth may have been delayed resulting in a larger area of decay.
Highlands Ranch dentists at Cottonwood Dental Group use the diagnodent to determine if an area has substantial decay. The dental explorer was invented in the “dark ages” and the Diagnodent was invented in the 21st Century. Our Highlands Ranch dentists take advantage of this modern technology. Our office strives to be on the cutting edge of technology and our Denver Web design company UsWebCentral has helped us integrate technology into our everyday practice.

Dentist Highlands Ranch new patient experience
The philosophy of want based dentistry dominates our practice. Our goal is to direct your care in a direction you wish to take. One of the many options you have is to do no treatment. As an example many patients have crowding of their teeth especially on the lower anterior teeth. The reason to correct is esthetics’s as well as functionally. Straight teeth are easier to brush, floss and easier to maintain. Patients may elect to undergo Invisalign orthodonticsor not… the choice is yours.
Our new patient examination
Our new patient examination first revolves around what you perceive your dental needs or desires are. Secondly, we evaluate your dental health using the following elements.
Patients with dentures often find that the lower denture never fits. The patient’s tongue and skinny ridge contribute to this lack of stability. Our Denver Dental implants doctors have found that dental implants can substantially improve the retention of a lower denture. Nobel Biocare a world leader in dental implants and dental implant design may have a solution for you. The Locator Implant Attachment System (locators by Zest) may provide the stability you would like. These locators are attatched to the dental implant and are similar to the concept of snap on tools that a mechanic would use. Our Dentists also serve the Lone Tree, Castle Pines, Parker and the Denver Colorado area.

In a previous blog we discussed dental implants in general and this article describes the use of the locator system in the Nobel Biocare system. These locators are resilient attatchments that go on top of the implant and have the following criteria
One (1) lb. design (red)
One and one-half (1.5) design (blue)
Three (3) lb. design (pink)
Four (4) lb. design (green)
This system works well if the divergence angle does not exceed 20 degrees or a divergent angle of the implant not more that 40 degrees. What this means to patients and dentists is that the implants do not have to be perfectly aligned for this system to work.
In addition our Denver Implant dentist use this system because the vertical height of the locator on the implant ranges from 2.5 -3.7 mm. What this means to dentists is, as a general rule, we do not need as much space to place the locators. Some implant denture stabilizing systems require much more room.
Easy for patients seat their implant denture
The self locating design of the locators allows the patient to seat the overdenture without the need for very accurate alignment. In addition the dual retention of this system provides inside and outside retention that gives these locators longer lasting performance.
Downside of locators
Locators do wear out and need to be replaced. Maintenance is expected and how often the locators need to be replaced is dependent upon the patient. Some patients are harder on the implant system than others.

Dental implants have been used in dentistry for over 30 years. Our Denver Implants Dentist offers Nobel Biocare dental implants for their patients which is the most studies system available on the market today. In the past when you lost a tooth dentist could only offer you a traditional dental bridge or… a removable partial denture. Now we can offer to replace a tooth with a titanium screw that can replace a root and a dental crown can be either screwed on cemented on top on the dental implant. Dental Implants are becoming the gold standard for tooth (teeth) replacement. Denver Implants dentistsDr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide dental implant services for their Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree, Castle Pines, Ken Caryl and Parker Colorado patients. They can be reached at (303) 694-9740. If teeth on either side have no decay or large filling it might be in your best interest to consider an implant to replace your missing tooth. In many instance the teeth on either side of the space are virgin (no decay… no fillings) and no treatment would be needed on these teeth. The downside is that in most cases it can take months for the implant to integrate. There are “certain” instances where an implant can be placed and a crown placed immediately. Only certain cases can be considered and most issues revolve around the amount and texture of the bone and how tightly the implant can be “screwed into” the bone.
Teeth Implants Denver, Multiple implants
How we approach replacing many teeth with implants has evolved over the years. At one time we had the opportunity to place and implant for each missing tooth. What our Denver dental implant dentist and others have found is that if implants are spaced “too” closely together there may not be enough bone to support them adequately. Implants with spans like bridges are becoming more popular.
Denture Implants Denver
Dental implants to support full dentures in one of the very best things dental implants do. For years our Denver Implant dentists, the Dr.’s DeLapp, have advised their denture patients that a lower denture for the most part… never fits! In the lower jaw the tongue can continually dislodge the denture and the ridge that exists melts away (shrinks) at a rate 3-times faster than the ridge on the upper teeth. Dental implants can help secure the denture so it can snap on and off or many implants can be placed and “almost” act a replacement for the missing teeth
Invisalign uses a series of clear retainers (nothing is invisible) instead of metal brackets and arch wires to straighten your teeth. Our Denver Invisalign dentists have found that it is difficult to tell how is wearing these retainers. For most patients it provides a way to straighten their teeth without the annoyance of traditional orthodontic brackets. Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide Invisalign orthodontics to their patients in Highlands Ranch, Castle Pines, Lone Tree, Parker, Douglas County, Ken Caryl, and the Denver Metro area. In addition, our Denver Invisalign dentists provide a variety of cosmetic services for their patients.
Invisalign works for many but not all patients. Complex orthodontics still needs to be treated in a conventional manner. However, slight rotations and crowding can be treatment. Our Denver Invisalign Dentists can give your a pretty good idea if you are a candidate for Invisalign. Please feel free to schedule your look see appointment at (303) 694-9740.
