Modern health care has been spectacular in the last 100 years. Modern antibiotics (penicillin) was not available until around WW II. This fact sometimes lulls us into a false sense of security that what ever happens we are just a “pill” away from a cure. In addition, most of the time, we believe that pain or discomfort is an absolute sign that some pathology or disease is going on. This is true for the vast majority of life’s illnesses except for the “silent illnesses”. Dental disease, like certain types cancers have minor or no symptoms until the disease has progressed significantly. In the dental field when the patient complains of pain… in many instances… we may be looking at a root canal or extracting the tooth. Our Highlands Ranch dentists, Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide general dentistry to their patients living in the southeast corridor of the Denver Metro area. Dental patients come from Ken Caryl, Lone Tree, Castle Pines, Douglas County, Parker, Greenwood Village, and Denver Colorado.

Highlands Ranch and Denver Dentists
Dr. Sarah Parsons has joined the Denver dental practice of Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp. Dr. Parsons graduated from the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine in June 2010. Dr. Parsons is currently accepting new patients at our Highlands Ranch and Denver dental office. Dr Parsons recently completed 48 hours of training for “minimal sedation”permit issued from the Colorado State Board of Dental Examiners. The State of Colorado requires only 16 hours and her training exceeded the minimum standard by over three times. Call our Denver dental office and make an appointment today to see if sedation dentistry is for you.
Denver and Highlands Ranch dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp have attended or taught several hundreds of continuing education courses so far this year. The doctors attended the 26th Annual Scientific Session the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). Other recent courses included additional courses in cosmetic dentistry, root canals, Advanced Cardiac life Support and “Minimal” and “Moderate Sedation” course work. All of these courses were fantastic. One of our favorite course was taught by Corky Wilhite DDS. Transitional bonding refers to a concept in cosmetic dentistry where a semi-final or transitional solution if presented to the patient. Porcelain Dental Veneers are the ultimate indental esthetic in Denver but composite direct veneers are an alternative to the porcelain dental veneer solution. The advantage of this transitional therapy is costs are approximately 1/2 of laboratory fabricated porcelain dental veneers. In time… the patient may wish to “transition ” into porcelain vereers. In addition Dr. James DeLapp attended a 10 day Moderate Sedation course at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry from April to July. He will apply with the State Board for a Moderate Dental Sedation permit. Currently all three doctors have a Minimal Dental Sedation permit from the State Board.
Digital dental x-rays(radiographs) are becoming the standard of care in dentistry. Our Highlands Ranch dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp have had digital radiography for the past ten (10) years. One of the most significant benefits is the reduction in the amount of radiation the patient(and staff) experiences. It therefore also is less exposure for their staff. One of the many “other” benefits is the ability to send the dental digital image over the Internet. These can be viewed by insurance companies or specialist offering a second opinion.

Diagnodent dental cavity detector Highlands Ranch Dentist, Denver Dentistry
Historically, dentists have used the dental explorer to determine if an area on a tooth was sound or if it had decay. If the “pit” or “groove” in the tooth was “sticky”… decay was/is diagnosed. Cavities (dental decay) in the fluoride era can be difficult to identify until substantial damage has occurred by traditional methods (explorer). The Diagnodent is a laser that can identify cavities in a much more accurate manner. Highlands Ranch dentists Dr. H. Candace DeLapp and Dr. James DeLapp use the Diagnodent as one of several tools to determine if an area has dental decay or not. Our dental patients come from the Parker, Douglas County, Ken Caryl, Lone Tree, Castle Pines and the greater Denver Colorado area.

Alternatives to dental implant Highlands Ranch dentist, Denver dentistry.
Dental implants have altered the way we replace spaces due to tooth extraction. There are many reasons and situations that we consider dental implants. It ranges from replacing an individual tooth… to providing support for a lower denture… to …placing a mouth full of implants “essentially” replacing each tooth (with bridges etc). Our Highlands Ranch dentists, Dr. H. Candace DeLapp and Dr. James DeLapp provide dental implant treatment for our dental patients in Douglas County, Parker, Castle Pines, and Lone Tree, Ken Caryl, and Denver Colorado area
Alternative to dental implants include but are limited to:
- No treatment
- Delaying treatment (risks of teeth shifting with time)
- Traditional Fixed Dental Bridges (two crowns fused with the “fake” tooth in between
- Partial removable denture (if you still have some teeth remaining)
- Over denture (if you have root tips that the denture can snap into)
- Full dentures.
- An upper denture fits “OK” (generally)
- A lower denture “never” fits
Risks of Dental implants Denver Dental Implants
Dental implants on occasion… do not fuse to the bone (osseointegrate). While this is an infrequent occurrence it is disappointing when it occurs. Healthy, non-smoking dental patients have a less likelihood of implant failure.
Osteoporosis can complicate implant treatment. Dental patients taking bis-phosphonates are at “very high” risk for ANY procedure involving bone structure. If you are taking bis-phosphonates you … MUST …inform you doctor. The consequences can be erosion of your bone (etc.) to name a few. Techniques have evolved which has decreased the common risks of infection, bleeding and nerve damage.

Tooth whitening solutions Highlands Ranch dentist, Denver Dentistry
Highlands Ranch cosmetic dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide cosmetic tooth whitening to their patients. There are two different types of teeth whitening solutions one can use and while similar have different concentrations and slightly different effects. One solution is Hydrogen peroxide and the other carbamide peroxide. Our Highlands Ranch cosmetic dentist also sees dental patients in Ken Caryl, Castle Pines, Lone Tree, Douglas County, Parker, and Denver Colorado area.
A University of Puerto Rico study compared the whitening efficacy of 9% Hydrogen peroxide and a 20% carbamide peroxide solution. The results were that both groups had significant increase in teeth whitening after 14 days. The only slightly interesting aspect of this study was the hydrogen peroxide solution had more whitening after five (5) days but after 14 days neither group could be differentiated from each other. Both of these solutions were delivered by custom bleaching trays.
The conclusion was both groups whitened very well and at the end if 14 days were statically identical.
Our Highlands Ranch cosmetic dentists offers various types of teeth whitening (teeth bleaching) to our patients. There are many choices and all current solutions are either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide in different concentrations. Please feel free to contact our office for an appointment today. We can be reached at (303) 694-9740

Difficult tooth colors to whiten – Highlands Ranch dentist, Denver Dentistry
From all the ads we see… we get the illusion that whitening can be accomplished on every dental patient easily. While a majority of patients find whitening quick and easy there are patients who are refractory to whitening where the results are difficult. Certain colors are disappointing for both the patient and the office. Highlands Ranch dentist Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide cosmetic dentistry to their dental patients in Denver, Lone Tree, Castle Pines, Ken Caryl, and in Parker Colorado.
Types of colors that whiten poorly include but are not limited to:
- Tetracycline staining (browns and grays)
- Heavy fluorosis (opaque white and brown stains)
- Heavy mineral deposits (orange and brown colors etc.)
- Gray tints
- Brown tints
- Gray/ brown tints

The Beatles helped fund early CAT Scans- Dental Implants Highlands Ranch and Denver Dentistry
Computer Axial Tomography (CAT scans) that is used in medicine and dentistry provide an invaluable service to humanity. Dr. Mathew R. Lark provides a great review of Cone Beam Technology in the August 2008 Dental Economics. In the 1970’s, British engineer Godfrey Hounsfield of EMI Laboratories and physicist Alan Cormack of Tufts University did initial research on CAT scan technology. Highlands Ranch dentists, Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp use CAT scan technology for their dental patients in Ken Caryl, Douglas County, Parker, Castle Pine, Lone Tree and the greater Denver area. Click here for Denver Implants Dentistry
The Beatles… John, Paul, George and Ringo provided funding for the earliest models. The connection of CAT scans with the Beatles comes their record company EMI. In the early 1970’s the research division of EMI started some of the initial research on CAT scans. When we think of EMI …we think of rock and roll and records but EMI like so many companies does so many different things.

Teeth whitening take home trays. Highlands Ranch dentist, Denver Dentistry
Take home whitening trays still remain the gold standard of teeth whitening. This system is proven over decades and works on a vast majority (but not all) patients. The chief complaint of the tray systems is the time and effort needed for the patient to whiten their teeth. Highlands Ranch cosmetic dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide may different types of tooth whitening to their patients. We see dental patients from Parker, Lone Tree, Castle Pines, Ken Caryl, Douglas County and Denver
Alternatives to tray whitening. Highlands Ranch dentist, Denver dentistry
There are several ways to whiten teeth and include but are not limited to:
- Tooth whitening tooth pastes
- Teeth whitening strips
- Over the counter whitening trays
- Mail order tooth whitening trays
- One hour (or so) whitening (Brite Smile, Zoom, Luma… etc)
All have varying degrees of success but the issue is time and concentration of the solutions on the teeth. The lower the concentration of the solution the more time the solution needs to be on the tooth. The greater the concentration of the solution the less time is needed on the tooth.
