Circa (2010) their office tends to use more traditional metal based material on the second molars (the very back tooth for many patients).

One of the elements that is difficult to predict with certainity is how much force the patient exerts on their back teeth. For many it is readily apparent and for other it is less apparent.  For these patients we have found that a traditional PFM  or full metal dental crown “may” work best.

Bonded restorations leave more of your tooth left

In order to do a traditional crown more tooth structure is removed when compared to a bonded inlay or onlay.  In this manner we are able to “tooth bank” this virgin tooth structure that may be needed to a traditional dental crown at a later date.

Exercise appears to protect White Blood Cells

German researchers are in the process of publishing a paper in the journal Circulation that endurance athletes appear to be able to live a longer healthier life than healthy non smoking adults who did not exercise regularly. This fact may be due to the enhancement of white blood cells which have elongated telomers.  When telomeres get t9o short they stop dividing and you begin to show signs of aging. The role of white blood cells role was primarily thought to be to fight off infections but more recent studies have shown that white blood cells can also seek out abnormal cells growth associated with cancers. One of the many criteria used by our Denver implants dentist are  the volume both height and width of the bone in the edentulous space (where the tooth is missing). Horowitz et al (2009) in Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistrydescribes a study in which a synthetic bone was added to the extraction site. These authors used pure phase beta tricalcium phostpate to help preserve the ride volume after a tooth was extracted and prior to dental implant being placed. This bone augmentation preserved 91% of the bone volume when compared to 50% with out the augmentation.

Crown lengthening

A recent article in the ADA News discusses the thinking process dentist should go through when determining whether to do crown lengthening. Highlands Ranch dentists Dr. James DeLapp and H. The design of your smile depends on the combination of teeth shapes.  The overall look of the teeth are most dictated by the incisal edges of the teeth.  There have been many author dentists that have given names of the styles of the teeth. The designs include but are not limited to:

How does the diagnodent work?

The diagnodent uses a low level laser to fluoresce the tooth.  Cavities emit a certain wave length back to the sensor.  The sensor picks up the returning light wave and emits both a digital read out as well as an audio sound.

Is the diagnodent painful?

Our Lone Tree and Highlands Ranch dentist have not found any sensitivity from this procedure. It is like shinning a light on the tooth.

Why use a diagnodent?

We use the diagnodent because we are able to identify a cavity earlier.  When detected earlier we can remove the cavity and preserve more of the natural tooth structure. Composite fillings (white dental fillings) allow us to bond to the tooth structure and conserve much more tooth structure that silver fillings allowed us to do.

Does the diagnodent work well with composite fillings or dental sealants?

As a general rule of thumb composite fillings (white dental fillings) fluoresce and can give false positives for cavities.  In addition the teeth need to be cleaned and free of plaque and calculus.
