Post operative difficulties with dental extractions

Most  post operative dental treatment is routine and uneventful.  Some are not. It is these small percentages that patients need to understand and accept as possible outcomes before treatment is started. Informed Consent for dental extractions

Informed consent for dental extractions can be accomplished a variety of ways.  First certainly in orally… letting yo know the common and uncommon consequences of dental surgery.  The second is written and the third in a combination of both.  Our Highlands Ranch dentist want to inform you of the common consequences of having a tooth taken out.  Those would include bleeding (obviously) pain (no kidding) possible infection for the most common consequences.  Less common consequences include dry socket…and … damage to adjacent teeth or filling. Uncommon but POSSIBLE consequences include sinus perforation ( a hole into the sunus where the root was) to numbnes of the lower lip… chin… or tongue.

Options for dental extraction

Obviously the first option is no treatment. A second might be some type or root canal or gum treatment.  Sometimes there is no”good” option other than extraction.  The key is “you” get to choose! You should know the consequences of treatment and NO treatment.  Then armed with this information you decide.

Gum disease and Tissue Destruction

Tissue Destructive Enzymes

Tissue destructive enzymes has been the focus of researchers for many years in the development of periodontal disease. Essentially what happens is enzymes degrade the collagen  (fibrous) network in the gum tissue. Dental researchers Fullmer and Gibson (Nature 1966) revealed that collagenase is present in the gum tissue of the patient.  It is this enzyme collagenase that destroys the gum tissue.

Antibiotic use in Periodontal disease

The knowledge on how tissue is destroyed led the Food and Drug Administration to approve the use of a tetracycline class of antibiotic in the treatment of periodontal disease. Doxyxycline is a collagenase-inhibiting antibiotic and  helps preserve the architecture  and form of the gum tissue. This drug combined with brushing, flossing, diet control and quitting smoking are effective in “most” patients with periodontal disease.

Closed Labor day Monday September 7th 2009, Dentist Highlands Ranch

Our Highlands Ranch dental office will be closed Monday September 7th for Labor Day. The office will be open at 7:00 Tuesday for scheduling appointments.  When leaving messages on our answering tape most patients leave a phone call back number that is easy to identify.  However… as you guessed… some rattle off their phone number so fast that it is difficult to decipher. This weekend we listened to a call 7 times and combined with  mumbling were finally able to call back.

Dr’s DeLapp Dentists Highlands Ranch, are teaching at the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine

Highlands Ranch dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp semester is ending next week at the University of Colorado Dental School. Dr. James DeLapp has been teaching Tuesday’s and Friday’s and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp has been teaching Wednesday’s and Friday.  Their Highlands Ranch dental office is closed on Fridays because both doctors teach at the dental school.

Dr.s DeLapp we be using their time off on new course development and planning the next semester.  The Dental  School is back in session in early August so time off is limited.  Dr. James DeLapp will be teaching a Cosmetic Dentistry course and Dr. Candace DeLapp will be teaching an Operative Dentistry course.
